Sutherland: Statement on President Trump's Military Transgender Ban

PULLMAN — Washington 5th Congressional District Candidate Matthew J. Sutherland released the following statement after President Trump announced his intentions to disallow transgender Americans "to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military" this morning on Twitter.

"While it is not clear how President Trump intends to carry out the arbitrary, unpatriotic and discriminatory ban he announced this morning on Twitter, what is clear is that he has no loyalty to the thousands of courageous transgender American service members in uniform actively protecting our country.

Transgender Americans have been serving openly since last year when then-Secretary of Defense Carter ordered the Pentagon to end the previous ban.

Just last month, Secretary of Defense Mattis extended a review by six months regarding whether transgender individuals serving in the military affects the "readiness or lethality" of the force.

This announcement by the President confirms an incoherent administration that is actively seeking to weaken our military and the nation it defends.

We must have the courage to stand up for our fellow Americans, particularly those who are willing to stand up for us and risk their lives by serving our country."
