Sutherland: Statement on LGBTQ+ Pride Month

PULLMAN - Matt Sutherland, 2018 Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington’s 5th Congressional District, released the following statement regarding his support of LGBTQ+ Pride Month:

"This month, we recognize the leaders who fought for LGBTQ+ rights throughout history. From the protests at the Stonewall Inn to the 2015 decision by the Supreme Court to legalize same-sex marriage, these activists fought long and hard for equal rights, and they still fight today. We are proud of our state for legalizing same-sex marriage three years before federal legalization, and our state’s laws protecting our citizens from loss of employment because of their gender identity and sexual orientation. Washington may be one of the most progressive states, but there is still more to do. The struggle for equality is far from over.

"Harvey Milk, one of the greatest LGBTQ+ civil rights leaders of all time, once said that “Hope will never be silent.” Together, we can fulfill that message for everyone. We have the means to change the status quo and to work as a country to guarantee the rights every American is entitled to under our Constitution.  Our voices will never falter or quiet, not until we have built a safe, fair and more hopeful future for all."
