Sutherland: Statement on Senate Release of the American Healthcare Act (AHCA)

PULLMAN - Matt Sutherland, 2018 Democratic candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington’s 5th Congressional District, released the following statement regarding the release of the Senate version of the American Healthcare Act:

"Last month, I denounced Cathy McMorris Rodgers for her role in leading the charge in the House of Representatives to pass the dangerous and cruel American Healthcare Act (AHCA); a bill seeking to remove critical protections for everyday Americans. Today, after weeks of 13 white men having closed back-room discussion, Senate Republicans revealed their own disastrous version of the AHCA which did nothing to alleviate the negative aspects of the House bill. The Senate version of the AHCA makes even deeper cuts to Medicaid, maternity care, and mental health care to provide large tax breaks to large corporations and the wealthiest one percent of Americans. This bill does absolutely nothing to fix the state of healthcare in America, instead punishing anyone who isn’t rich and handing the insurance giants everything they asked for.

Even some Republican Senators are denouncing the bill for its cruelty. This bill is not a show of bipartisanship. As your Representative, I will fight for the freedom to research a single-payer system in the United States, which is something also denied to us by the Congressional Republicans. I will fight for this because I believe healthcare is a human right; that hard-working Americans shouldn’t have to choose between putting food on the table and quality medical care for their loved ones."
